Sweet Briar College will present its Weekend Film Series for the fall 2005 semester beginning Friday, Aug. 26. The series features recently released films, and is free and open to the public. All shows are 7:30 p.m. in Tyson Auditorium in the College’s Benedict Hall.
Here is the full schedule:
- Aug. 26-27: “Bride and Prejudice” — Jane Austen’s classic goes Bollywood in director Gurinder Chadha’s latest film. Aishwarya Rai stars as Lalita Bakshi (Elizabeth Bennett) making sparks fly as she meets American hotel executive Will Darcy. Rated PG
- Sept. 9-10: “Born into Brothels” — Directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman put cameras into the hands of children living in a Calcutta red-light district. The children document their lives outside the prospering Indian economy. The film won an Oscar for best documentary in 2004. Rated R
- Sept. 23-24: “The Assassination of Richard Nixon” — Directed by Niels Mueller and based on a true story, Sean Penn plays Samuel Bicke, a depressed, angry middle-aged man who turns dangerous when he decides that, for the good of the country, he is going to assassinate the president. Rated R
- Oct. 7-8: “The Event” — A young man with AIDS has tried every medication and treatment before deciding his only option is suicide. He throws a party for all of his friends, and then ends his life. Parker Posey’s portrayal of a district attorney investigating the case provides the avenue for telling his story. Rated R
- Oct. 28-29: “Crash” — A car accident brings together a diverse group of people in Los Angeles, exposing the dangers of racial profiling and prejudice. Stars Don Cheadle and Sandra Bullock. Rated R
- Nov. 11-12: “High Tension” — College pals Marie and Alex encounter loads of trouble — and blood — while on holiday at Alex’s parent’s country home in this French thriller. Subtitled. Rated R
- Dec. 9-10: “Howl’s Moving Castle” — The new Japanese anime hit by Hayao Miyazaki is a love story centered on Zofî, an 18-year-old in an old woman’s body, and a magician named Hauru. The film is set in a fantasy world with elements of science fiction and war drama. Rated PG
