With a score of 17 under par, the team of Steve Milby, Randall Jones, Barry Laven and Scott Bowles won the First-Annual Friends of Athletics Golf Tournament, held Friday at the Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst County.
Fifteen teams entered the tournament, helping Friends of Athletics raise over $5,000 for the Sweet Briar College athletic program.
Tournament winner, Barry Laven won the closest to the pin contest on hole #17 and Frank Pinollo hit the longest drive on hole #8. The captain’s choice tournament also featured a hole-in-one 2005 Ford Mustang give-away on hole #4, sponsored by Amherst Motors and beat the “pro” competition.
“It was a fantastic first event,” said tournament organizer Paul Shaw, SBC Department of Physical Education and Recreation Chair. “Everyone had fun and we would like to thank everyone involved, for supporting Sweet Briar College Friends of Athletics.”
Special thanks to tournament sponsors Blue Ridge Soccer Haus, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, High Peak Sportswear, Hilb Rogal and Hobbs, John Hall and Family, La Carreta in Madison Heights, Poplar Grove Golf Club, Subway in Amherst, The Depot Grille, The Florence Elston Inn, and Sweet Briar College Athletics.
