First-year midfielder Ellie Donahue (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) has been selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Lacrosse Rookie-of-the-Year. Sweet Briar had six players named to the 2005 ODAC All-Conference teams by the conference coaches, capping off a 10-6 season.
Donahue was joined on the first-team by junior defender Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and sophomore goalkeeper Emily Fitzpatrick (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy). She was third in the conference this season with 2.94 goals per game and second on the team in points and goals. Donahue’s scoring ability helped push Sweet Briar into the semifinals of the ODAC tournament. In Sweet Briar’s quarterfinal upset of Lynchburg College, the first-year tied the conference season-high for goals in a game with seven.
Wiley caused 20 turnovers this season, helping Sweet Briar finish second in the conference in caused turnovers. Her aggressive play led to 66 ground balls and many offensive drives for the Vixens.
Fitzpatrick backed up her 141-save season last year, with another stellar season between the pipes for Sweet Briar. Her goalkeeping led the conference in several categories, including shutouts and saves percentage. Her .591 saves percentage currently ranks 11th nationally in Division III. Fitzpatrick stopped 166 shots this season, including a season-high 20 in the quarterfinals against Lynchburg College.
Sweet Briar leading scorer first-year Bethany Bressan (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s Belfield) and senior co-captain Ginger Tripp (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) were second-team selections. Bressan finished top three in the conference in goals, assist, and points per game. Tripp was a team leader on the field, finishing near the top in almost every category for the Vixens. She scored 17 goals this season and assisted in 12 others and was second on the team in ground balls and caused turnovers.
All-tournament defender Vicky Gadikian ’07 (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) picked up honorable mention honors. She played strong defense for the Vixens this season and came on strong in the tournament with several key defensive stops.
Sweet Briar reached the semifinals of the ODAC Lacrosse Championships for the first time in 17 years. The Vixens led the conference in shot percentage and assists per game, averaging 12.12 goals per game this season.
