Sweet Briar, VA—Six Sweet Briar seniors made their last home match memorable with a 5-4 win over rival Hollins University. With the match on the line, senior Laura Denson (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) came back from 1-4 down in the second set to defeat Sarah Sullivan 6-3, 6-4 and secure the victory. Denson and fellow Texans Julia Geyer '05 (Dallas, TX/Highland Park HS) and Sue Knouse '05 (Washington, DC/Fort Worth Country Day School) were double winners for SBC, taking both their singles and doubles matches. Knouse racked up her seventh straight singles win on the season.
Also playing their last home match were Torrey Shallcross '05 (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS), Brentz Basten '05 (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest HS) and Alex Lussier "05 (Napa, CA/St Helena HS). Coach Kelly Morrison said, "This was senior day and it was up to the seniors to make a difference. With our regular line-up in place, and injury-free, we beat a very good Hollins team in a terrific last home match."
The Vixens finish the regular season at Randolph-Macon Woman's College tomorrow. Match time is 4 pm. ODAC Championship play begins this weekend at Hollins.
