Sweet Briar College lacrosse ended its regular season with a win Friday, dropping Roanoke College 10-4, for the first time in 18 years. The win evens the Vixens’ conference record at 4-4 and moves them into fifth place heading into the postseason, which begins Wednesday.
Sweet Briar never trailed in the game, scoring in the first three minutes of play on an unassisted goal from Bethany Bressan '08 (Charlottesville,VA/St. Anne's Belfield). Four Vixens ended with two goals scored each. Senior Karah Strawley (Charlottesville,VA/Covenant) picked up three assists. Keeper Emily Fitzpatrick '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) stopped 13 of the Maroons' shots.
“We completely controlled the tempo of the game,” said coach Ackerman about the game. “We got great team play from everyone, which is what we needed.” Coincidentally, Ackerman was captain of the Sweet Briar team that defeated Roanoke in 1987.
The Vixens will be on the road for the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Tournament. Final pairings will be determined after all regular season matches have concluded.
