The spring Writers Series at Sweet Briar College has one more offering on Tuesday, April 19, from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Boxwood Room at the Elston Inn. Author Edward Schwarzschild will read from his first novel, "Responsible Men."
Like Schwarzschild himself, his character Max Wolinsky hails from a family of salesmen. But Max has a tendency to use his talents for less-than-honorable gains. The novel explores what makes him cross over the line from responsible man to con man, and what makes him step back.
Meanwhile, the author weaves a compelling story with plot twists and family drama aplenty.
"Edward Schwarzschild's 'Responsible Men' is not merely a remarkably assured and enjoyable first novel; it is a work of art with the rarest of qualities: a profoundly moral center. Max Wolinsky's heartfelt and often hilariously inept efforts to be both a good father and a good son serve as the centerpiece of the author's incisive examination of human frailty and the abiding desire to craft something meaningful and lasting from the confusing jumble of life,' wrote John Gregory Brown, SBC professor of English, in a review of the book.
Schwarzschild is an assistant professor at the University at Albany, SUNY, and teaches fiction writing, American literature, and film studies.
The reading is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow. For more information, please contact Brown at (434) 381-6434 or
