Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Bill Suter, clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court, will speak on "The Supreme Court Today" at Sweet Briar College on Thursday, April 14 in the Florence Elston Conference Center's Boxwood Room. The free event is sponsored by the SBC Center for Civic Renewal and is open to the general public.
Suter, who received the 2004-05 Center for Civic Renewal Public Service Medal, has enjoyed a distinguished public service career in the military and served in numerous positions of responsibility around the world. His lecture will provide an insider's view of today's Supreme Court followed by a question-and-answer session.
In 1991 Suter became the 19th person to hold the position of U.S. Supreme Court clerk. His lengthy career includes service as an Army judge advocate, major general, appellate judge, deputy staff judge advocate of the U.S. Army Vietnam, staff judge advocate of the 101st Airborne Division, commandant of the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) School, and assistant judge advocate general of the Army. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.
A graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio and Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans, Suter received basketball and academic scholarships, respectively, at Trinity and Tulane, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served on the Tulane Law Review. He is a graduate of the Judge Advocate General's School graduate course, the Command and General Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
A frequent lecturer at law schools, bar association meetings, and civic functions, Suter and his wife, Jeanie, a teacher, have two children and four grandchildren.
