More than 100 alumnae, parents, and friends gathered on Thursday, November 4, 2004, at the Park Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. to celebrate Sweet Briar's unprecedented fund-raising effort. Elizabeth Smith White '59, Co-Chair of the Charlotte Campaign Event Planning Committee, announced that over $82 million in gifts and pledges to Our Campaign For Her World have been received.
The special dinner event was hosted by the Charlotte Alumnae Club and served as an introduction to Our Campaign For Her World, outlining the details of the bold vision and strategic plan for the College.
Members of the Sweet Briar Faculty were on hand to conduct Alumnae College seminars for guests as part of the festivities. Christian Carr, Assistant Professor of Arts Management and Director of the Sweet Briar College Museum presented "Collections-Based Studies at Sweet Briar College;" Dr. Jonathan Green, Dean of the College, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Professor of Music presented "Music: Why We Listen;" and Dr. Barbara Perry, Carter Glass Professor of Government and Director of the Center for Civic Renewal, presented "Clotheshorse or Cold Warrior? Jacqueline Kennedy and the Role of Modern First Ladies." Dr. Perry's seminar was based on her new book, "Jacqueline Kennedy: First Lady of the New Frontier," which was available for attendees.
In fall 2002, Sweet Briar embarked on the largest comprehensive fund-raising effort in the College's history with the public announcement of an unprecedented campaign goal of $102 million. Our Campaign For Her World emphasizes a mix of endowment, facility, and program objectives and seeks support for the College's Annual Fund. In addition to the building needs that the campaign will support, faculty and students will benefit from scholarships and funds for many academic activities.
