The 2005 edition of U. S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges" has ranked Sweet Briar College 68th out of 100 top liberal arts colleges. The ranking positions Sweet Briar at the top of Virginia's distinguished women's colleges, and as the second most highly ranked liberal arts college in the state.
Colleges are scored on a variety of criteria such as the average freshman retention rate, the annual graduation rate, and the college's acceptance rate. Sweet Briar's closest sister colleges, Randolph-Macon Woman's College and Hollins University, ranked 85th and 87th respectively.
