Sweet Briar College student Jan Jennings will demonstrate her dance and choreography skills in her Senior Dance Concert on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. in the Murchison Lane Auditorium of the Babcock Fine Arts Center. The show is free and open to the general public.
The concert features 10 original dances, including a piece by guest choreographer Lynn Neuman and a children's group performance. Jennings choreographed two solos, a duet, three group pieces, and two dance videos. "Pressure Force" utilizes the lighting scheme as a force pushing from opposing sides, "False Image" is a solo created to address the issue of eating disorders, and "The Tie That Binds" is a duet choreographed to music by composer Erich Kory.
Choreographed in the spring of 2004, "Delusional Enclosure" has been recreated in light of its presentation at the upcoming American College Dance Festival at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. "Three" is choreographed to the music of Graeme Revell, while "Connection," choreographed for six dancers, uses physical as well as literal bonds to connect the dancers. The two videos, "Safe Haven" and "Inescapable," are beginning experiments with dance and technology.
Jennings will perform a solo, "In the Presence of Uncertainty," choreographed by guest artist Lynn Neuman, acting artistic director and co-founder of Artichoke Dance Company in New York City. Neuman is a friend of SBC dance instructors Mark Magruder and Ella Magruder and has worked with Jennings and other Sweet Briar students.
"It was wonderful to get to see her again," Jennings said of collaborating with Neuman. "She's pushed me to my absolute limits. I think she's created a somewhat shocking, yet very unique dance."
Jennings is also showcasing the first group piece by the Sweet Briar Children's Dance Company. She instructs the campus-based group for beginning dancers - including Chelsea Giles, Margot Pleasants, and Julia Ayau - for one of her dance classes.
Jennings will be accompanied in her concert by fellow SBC students including Samantha Angus '05, Tacy Bolton '06, ‘Charli' Brissey '07, Heather Coley '08, Erica Kennedy '07, Casey Poore '05, Shanna Ryan '08, Betty Skeen '07, and Lynsie Watkins '05.
