Sweet Briar's Honors Colloquia series theme of "Order and Chaos" continues with a talk by University of Virginia professor Peter S. Onuf on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Cochran Library Browsing Room. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by an informal reception with light refreshments.
Onuf, a Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor in the UVa Corcoran Department of History, will present "Anarchy and Order in the American Founding." Specializing in the history of the early American republic, he is the author of eight books, beginning with his first in 1983, "The Origins of the Federal Republic: Jurisdictional Controversies in the United States." In recent years he has written about Thomas Jefferson's political thinking in "Jefferson's Empire: The Language of American Nationhood," which grew from his earlier studies on the history of American federalism, foreign policy, and political economy.
The Honors Colloquia series brings Sweet Briar faculty and visiting scholars for informal presentations that encourage discussion among listeners. Each year presenters are encouraged to think about their areas of study in the context of a single idea, creating an ongoing discourse that crosses all academic disciplines. This year's theme is order and chaos.
