Dr. Jonathan Green, acting dean of Sweet Briar College, has been appointed as the College's dean and vice president for Academic Affairs. Green brings years of academic experience, a dynamic array of interests, and an engaging, colorful personality to the position.
Green came to Sweet Briar in 1996 as an assistant professor of music and in 1998 was named associate professor and chair of the Music Department. A 1999 recipient of the SBC Excellence in Teaching Award, he served in 2003-04 as acting dean of the College following a year as associate dean of Academic Affairs.
A talented, award-winning musician and conductor, Green has distinguished himself as a scholar and composer. He has published four reference volumes in the
Conductor's Guide series (Scarecrow Press) on the classical period and choral-orchestral works and authored a bio-bibliography of Carl Ruggles among numerous other articles and reviews. He is also a member of the Conductors Guild board of directors and is editor of the
Journal of the Conductors Guild.
Green's works have been performed throughout the United States and internationally. Most recently, Green was the official composer for the "100 Years of Flight" celebration held last December in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
Green said he is excited about having a pivotal role at the school that has become a part of his life. "I am so pleased that the College has expressed its faith in my work. I have grown very attached to Sweet Briar over the past eight years, and I look forward to having the opportunity to help chart its vibrant future."
Before Sweet Briar, Green served in various capacities on the faculties of Williams College, Hampden-Sydney College, and Elon College, and for several years was a summer graduate faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
SBC President Elisabeth Muhlenfeld said the dean selection process was truly collaborative. "My thanks go out to the members of the search committee who did an exemplary job of recruiting and interviewing a talented pool of candidates, and to all members of the Sweet Briar community who took the time to interview the finalists and comment so thoughtfully on those interviews."
"I look forward to continued collaboration with Jonathan," she said.
