Sweet Briar College is expanding its international offerings with a minor in Latin American Studies (LAST). The 21-credit sequence is an interdisciplinary approach to learning about the regions of Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
The minor includes courses in culture, history, literature, politics, and religion, and requires basic proficiency in the Spanish language (one course beyond intermediate level).
The 2003-'04 program featured a duPont Scholar-in-Residence, John Gutierrez, who is completing his doctorate in Latin American history at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. His courses included "Revolutionary Movements in Latin America, Mexico, and Cuba" in fall 2003 and "Public Health and the Politics of Modernity in Latin America, 1880-1950" from this spring.
Margaret Stanton, director of LAST, said the minor is an excellent complement to majors and minors in anthropology, environmental studies, international affairs, Spanish, Spanish/Business, and many other fields.
