Victoria J. Baker, an anthropologist and alumna of Sweet Briar College, will return to her alma mater on Wednesday, Sept. 20 for a lecture sponsored by SBC’s anthropology department. The lecture, to be held at 7 p.m. in Tyson Auditorium (Benedict 100), is titled “The Blackboard in the Jungle: Schools around the Developing World.”
Baker is a professor and senior member of the anthropology department at Eckerd College, a coeducational liberal arts college in St. Petersburg, Fla. She earned her master’s and Ph.D. from Leiden University in the Netherlands and her bachelor’s degree from Sweet Briar.
Specializing in anthropology and education, Baker has conducted research in more than 20 developing countries on every inhabited continent. She has been published repeatedly, including dozens of articles and two books, “The Blackboard in the Jungle” (1988) and “A Sinhalese Village in Sri Lanka: Coping with Uncertainty” (1998).
