Sweet Briar soccer started the 2006 campaign Friday, picking up a 2-0 win at Salem College as the Vixens knocked in two early goals. Junior midfielder Whitney Shaffer (Norfolk, VA/Maury) put Sweet Briar on the board in the 17th minute, connecting on a pass from Bethany Magee (Prince George, VA/Prince George) just outside the 18. First-year Helen Phillips (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) added a second goal four minutes later, heading in a corner kick from fellow first-year Hannah Hesser (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal).
The Vixen defense kept its shape well in the game to help goalie Kristen Johnson ’09 (Federal Way, WA/Decatur) pick up her first shutout of the season. Johnson stopped four shots in the game
“I would have liked to have seen us finish a few more but Salem College has improved tremendously over the last year and the game proved to be a tricky one,” said coach Shaw about his team’s first game.
Sweet Briar has a quick turnaround as the team travels to Maryland tomorrow to face Goucher College at 4 p.m.
