Randolph-Macon’s Jill Dixon led all scorers with four goals Sunday as the Yellow Jackets spoiled Sweet Briar’s home opener with a 6-1 win. The conference match was the first game for either team this fall.
Macon jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first half with Dixon finding the cage twice and Morgan Hutchinson adding a third tally. Sweet Briar got on the board in the 45th minute when sophomore Sarah Goldstein (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) scored the Vixen's lone goal off a pass from Blair Sutton ’09 (Richmond, VA/Steward).
Despite creating several offensive opportunities for themselves, the Vixens could not come up with another goal as Randolph-Macon finished the half with three goals, the last of which came with no time remaining on the clock.
Sutton played strong for the Vixens on defense, as did Cat Cox ’08 (Prince Frederick, MD/Calverton) in goal. Cox picked up seven saves in her first game in the cage.
"I was really pleased with the play of the first-years. They were more poised under pressure then expected," said coach Jennifer Crispen. "We also had solid play from our returning players."
Sweet Briar is home again Thursday, taking on Lynchburg College at 4:30 p.m.
Overall: 0-1
