Already this academic year the Sweet Briar Art Gallery has opened shows in all three of its spaces, and hosted receptions that drew large, appreciative audiences.
The
independent study art students’ exhibit took in nearly 60 people, while the
Daniel Wilkerson show brought in about 93 attendees at back-to-back receptions on Sept. 7. And more than 100 signed in for the opening reception of “
Anonymous America,” curated by assistant professor of studio art John Morgan, on Sept. 14.
The independent study student show runs until Oct. 29 in the Benedict Hall Gallery. Works include pastel and charcoal drawings by junior Megan Maloney and Sweet Briar alumna Lauren Banks, and paintings by senior Rachel Reynolds. The artwork was produced this summer with guidance from Morgan.
Wilkerson’s engravings, as well as some of his paintings, drawings and sculptures, will be on display until Oct. 8 in the Babcock Fine Arts Center Gallery.
“Anonymous America,” features mostly unsigned work by “outsider” artists, including folk, tramp, trench and prison art, and quilts. It will be open until Dec. 3 in the Anne Gary Pannell Art Gallery.
Sweet Briar College art galleries are open to the public and admission is free. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday through Friday with evening hours until 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For more information or to schedule a tour, contact the director of SBC galleries at
