Sweet Briar soccer ended an emotional week Thursday with a tough 3-1 loss in its home opener against non-conference Peace College. The loss evens Sweet Briar’s record at 1-1 with the first conference game still to be played.
The Vixens held Peace to one goal in the first half but gave up two quick goals midway through the second to fall behind 3-0 with under 25 minutes to play. Sweet Briar finally erased the shutout in the 85th minute as junior Whitney Shaffer (Norfolk, VA/Maury) found the net off a free kick from Bethany Magee ’09 (Prince George, VA/Prince George).
"As a coaching staff, we are really disappointed in the team effort given today. With so much to play for, we let ourselves down, but I am confident that we can learn from this and be better in the future," said coach Paul Shaw.
Soccer is off until next Tuesday when the team travels to Harrisonburg to take on Eastern Mennonite at 7 p.m.
Overall: 1-1
