Sweet Briar volleyball scrapped and fought its way to a 3-2 win over Guilford College Tuesday in the team’s first home match of the season. The win was the first in the conference for the Vixens and improved Sweet Briar’s season record to 2-6.
The Quakers took the first two games by close scores of 30-24 and 30-26. Games three and four went Sweet Briar’s way as the team came up with timely and well-placed shots on the attack and several key blocks to take game three 30-25 and dominate the fourth, winning 30-18 to force the fifth and decisive match.
In game five, Guilford pulled out to a 6-3 lead before sophomore Meagan Bell (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst County) toed the serving line and served Sweet Briar to 8-6. After several lead changes, the Sweet Briar defense came up with a big side-out to take the game 15-13 and the match three games to two.
On offense, first-years Brianna Bone (Chipley, FL/Chipley) and Lindsay Sankoff (Charleston, WV/Capital) both put up double-digits in kills. Setter Caitlin Kuczynski ’10 (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) set a season-high in assists at 42. Katie McIntyre ’10 (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass), Sankoff, and Bell each had 20-plus in digs as the Vixen back row came up with 114 digs in the match.
