First-years Lauren Hogan (St. Augustine, FL/Pedro Menendez) and Helen Phillips (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) each scored hat tricks Saturday to help Sweet Briar soccer down visiting Salem College 7-0. The homecoming weekend win is the second of the season for Sweet Briar who is now 2-5 on the season.
Phillips kick-started the Vixen offense in the first half finding the net in the 11th and 16th minute. Both goals came off corner kicks from first-year Hannah Hesser (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal). Hogan and Whitney Shaffer ’08 (Norfolk, VA/Maury) followed in the 37th and 44th minutes to give Sweet Briar the 4-0 lead at the break.
The Vixen offense continued in the second frame as Phillips completed her hat trick off a pass from Carlina Muglia ’07 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) in the 79th minute. Hogan followed with two goals late in the game to pick up a hat trick of her own. Junior Bethany Magee (Prince George, VA/Prince George) assisted both of Hogan’s goals to finish with three assists.
Sophomore keeper Kristen Johnson (Federal Way, WA/Decatur) stopped one shot on the day to pick up her second shutout of the season.
