Charcoal drawings by Richmond artist Wolfgang Jasper will be on display Oct. 12 to Dec. 10 in the Babcock Fine Arts Center Gallery at Sweet Briar College.
Jasper’s work has appeared in galleries around the world, including South Korea, the former Soviet Union, Germany, Belgium and numerous U.S. galleries. He has a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“Eve, Packing for the Garden" is one of the pieces to be on display Oct. 12 to Dec. 10 in the Babcock Fine Arts Center Gallery.Jasper says his drawings are not contrived; as charcoal meets paper, he has no idea what will develop. “My process is that I start with a blank sheet of paper, [and] then I stand in front of it and start making some marks and whatever comes out comes out,” he said. “I never have a particular plan in mind when I start.”
Over time, Jasper said he has noticed similarities in his drawing, something he attributes to the unconscious workings of his mind and not a preset agenda. “I’m sure that those symbols that I’m using are symbolic of stuff that’s been going on through the ages,” he said. “Call it myth and fable, with my own personal spin on it, considering I’m an individual with my own experiences behind this.”
Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Friday and 1 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Admission is free. For more information, contact Rebecca Lane, Sweet Briar art galleries director, at (434) 381-6248 or
