Lynn Rainville, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology at Sweet Briar, will lecture on the history of African-American communities at Sweet Briar at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the Johnson Dining Room at Prothro.
The lecture, titled “Two Centuries of African-American Communities at Sweet Briar, ca. 1840 to Today,” will focus on African-Americans who have lived and worked at Sweet Briar.
In her abstract, Rainville writes, “From the enslaved people who farmed the Fletcher plantation to the nursemaids who cared for Daisy to the support staff for the daily operations at the College, the African-American community has contributed to the success of the plantation and College.”
Rainville’s presentation will draw from six years of archaeological survey and historic research.
Kelly Kraft-Meyer, SBC associate dean of co-curricular life, heard the lecture in February, when Rainville presented it as part of the College’s celebration of Black History Month. “It’s a terrific lecture. Fabulous,” she said. “It’s been well received in the past.”
The cost of dinner is $6.75 for the public and $5.50 for SBC faculty and staff. For more information, contact the office of co-curricular life at 381-6134.
