LYNCHBURG- For the third straight year in a row, the Hill City Cup remains in Sweet Briar hands as the Vixens defeated host Randolph-Macon Woman’s College 2-0 on Tuesday. The win is the first conference win of the season for Sweet Briar hockey and improves the Vixen’s overall record to 2-8.
Sophomore Rebecca Olander (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) gave Sweet Briar the 1-0 lead at 12:31 in the first half off a feed from Melissa Carron ’10 (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe North). Sarah Golstein '09 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) then sealed the deal in the second half, scoring an unassisted insurance goal.
Vixens Ann-Gordon Bennett '10 (Locust Hill, VA/Christchurch) and Cat Cox '08 (Prince Frederick, MD/Calverton) played well on the defensive end. Cox turned back 11 shots for the shutout.
Sweet Briar has only surrendered the Hill City Cup three times since 1990, taking the cup a total of 14 times.
“It was not the prettiest of games, but we did a very determined and workman job,” said coach Jennifer Crispen about her team’s play.
Sweet Briar is home this weekend, taking on Sewanee Saturday at 3 p.m. and Transylvania at 11 a.m. on Sunday
