First-year players helped power Sweet Briar lacrosse past non-conference Lees-McRae and the wind, Sunday. With the win, the Vixens improved to 6-3 on the season.
First-year Ellie Donahue (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) scored three times in the first half to put Sweet Briar up 4-2 at the break. The Vixens’ offense came alive in the second half, scoring 10 goals. Donahue finished the game with four goals. First-year Sarah Ross Stewart (Lexington, VA/Virginia Episcopal) put three on the board and Bethany Bressan ’08 (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s Belfield) led the team with five. Six Vixens picked up assists.
“We were able to overcome the weather conditions that were causing as many turnovers as we were committing,” said coach Missy Ackerman after the game. “It took us awhile to get our passing going, but after we did, I think we moved the ball well."
The Vixens are on the road this Tuesday at Ferrum. They return home April 7, to take on Guilford College at 4:30 p.m., in a game rescheduled because of rain.
