Orlando, FL—Sweet Briar met with mixed success in spring break matches, producing some good play and results in a multi-divisional match, but losing to Dickinson College 7-0. Missing some players from the roster resulted in players playing out of position as well as new doubles combinations. On Monday, March 14 against Dickinson, a regional Division III opponent, the #1 doubles team of Brentz Basten '05 (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) and Sue Knouse '05 (Washington, DC/Fort Worth CDS) lost 8-5. In #2 singles, Caroline Byrd '08 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) played well, but dropped a two-setter 6-3, 7-5 to Dickinson's Amanda Kaplan. At #4, junior Haley Graham (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) split sets with Melissa Nolan, but lost in a tiebreaker 10-5.
Match ResultsOn Tuesday, the squad played a mixed group of matches against Division II Central Arkansas and Division I Western Illinois. Basten defeated Western's #1 Bridget Wakzak 6-4, 6-3. Byrd split sets at #2, but took the tiebreaker against Western's Daniel Moy 6-3, 4-6, (10-4). Knouse made short work of Ana Selva (UCA) 6-1, 6-1 at #3, and Graham took Lindsey Butt (UCA) 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) at the #4 position. Graham and Rebecca Soliwada '08 (Carver, MA/Carver HS) lost at #2 doubles 9-8 (7-5).
Sweet Briar is 1-2 in dual match play, 0-1 in the ODAC. The Vixens host ODAC opponent Bridgewater College on March 23 at 4 pm.
