First-year Ellie Donahue (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) scored seven as Sweet Briar lacrosse upset #4 seed Lynchburg College, Wednesday, in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC tournament. The win gives Sweet Briar their first postseason win since 1988 and avenges a loss to the Hornets last week.
Senior Ginger Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherines) got the scoring started four minutes into the game off a free-position. Donahue followed with her first of three goals in the half. Both teams traded goals, ending 6-4 Sweet Briar at the break. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Fitzpatrick (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) kept the game close through the first 30 minutes, stopping 13 shots.
The Vixens outscored Lynchburg in the second half 5-3, giving up two goals late in the game. Sarah Ross Stewart ’08 (Lexington, VA/Virginia Episcopal) finished with two goals, one assists. Karah Strawley ’05 (Charlottesville, VA/Covenant) added to her assists total, picking up three assists and one goal. Fitzpatrick stopped 20 of 31 shots taken by the Hornets.
“We knew we didn’t play the game we were capable of last Wednesday,” said coach Ackerman about losing to Lynchburg last week. “We talked about playing as a team and everyone stepping it up. I think we played a very good team game today.”
Sweet Briar advances to the semifinals, where they take on #1 seed Washington & Lee University, Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
