Sweet Briar College won its first two games in school history Saturday, defeating the Wildcats of Randolph-Macon Woman's College 10-7 and 6-5.
In Game one, Ania Stubelek '07 (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) recorded the Vixen's first hit, with a single in the second inning. Stubelek later scored the program's first run on a RBI hit from Lindsey Nash '05 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County).
Stubelek led the Vixens with three runs batted in. Nash and Beth Anderson '08 (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) each had two RBI. Nash also picked up the win in game one, striking out one and walking four.
Game two remained tied at 3-3 through seven innings. The Wildcats led off in extra innings, scoring two runs to lead 5-3. Down by two runs and down to their last at bat, Beth Anderson scored from third on an illegal pitch to bring the Vixens within one. Anderson started the inning at second base under NCAA tie-breaker rules. After a walk and base hit, Melanie Stine '07 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) knocked in the game-tying and game-winning runs.
Anderson recorded the win on the mound, going eight innings.
"We came from behind in both games to win," said head coach Tony Campbell. "I am really proud of how the girls played."
The Vixens are now 2-0 on the season. They face Salem College at home tomorrow at 1 p.m.
2005 marks the first season Sweet Briar College has fielded a varsity softball team. Previously, the Vixens played at the intercollegiate club level.
