Sweet Briar field hockey was defeated 5-1 Wednesday by Roanoke College, in the Vixens' last match of the regular season. They begin the first round of the ODAC Tournament Saturday. The Maroons scored four times in the first 35 minutes of play, but Sweet Briar regrouped at halftime and came out strong for the second half. The Vixens' got on the board when Paula Kirkland (Glen Allen, VA/St. Gertrude's) connected on a pass from Ginger Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's) on one of three penalty corners taken by Sweet Briar in the half. Kirkland and Ellie Donahue (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) each had one defensive save as Sweet Briar allowed just one second-half goal. Julie Drake (San Jose, CA/Willow Glen) and Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) also played well. Wiley had 25 saves in goal. Sweet Briar will be on the road for the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Tournament. Final pairings will be determined after all regular season matches have concluded.
