Sweet Briar tennis kicked off the college's Families' Weekend athletic schedule by defeating cross-town rival Randolph- Macon Woman's College 8-1 Friday evening in front of family and friends. The Vixens led coming out of singles 5-1 on wins at #2 through #6. Seniors Brentz Basten (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest), Laura Denson (Houston, TX/Episcopal) and Julia Geyer (Dallas, TX/Highland Park) all won in straight sets. Randolph-Macon Woman's lone win came from Tallie Fugate at #1 singles. Sweet Briar continued its domination in doubles, taking all three matches. In #1 doubles, Torrey Shallcross (Alpharetta,GA/Milton) and Basten defeated Fugate and Stephanie King 8-5. Denson and Haley Graham (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) defeated Ellen Barnes and Dora Marin by the same score in the three slot. In #2 doubles, Geyer and Caroline Byrd (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) defeated Jenna Nacht and Stephanie Ciechanowski 8-4. This match was Sweet Briar's only dual match of the fall season. The team compiled over 30 wins in tournaments held at Sweet Briar, University of Mary Washington, and Washington and Lee this fall. They return to the courts in January for their spring season.
