Sweet Briar College took home first place honors Sunday in the doubles bracket of the Virginia Women's College Tennis Championship.
Sweet Briar's Haley Graham '06 (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and Laura Denson '05 (Houston, TX/Episcopal) teamed up to defeat Candice Dalton and Sarah Sullivan of Hollins University in the eight game pro set doubles final, 8- 4.
Graham and Denson defeated teams from Mary Baldwin College and Randolph-Macon Woman's College yesterday to reach the finals. Vixens Torrey Shallcross '0 (Alpharetta, GA/Milton) and Brentz Basten '05 (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) placed third in doubles.
In the singles brackets, Sweet Briar sophomore Morgan Roach (Culpeper, VA/The Highland School) lost in the final match to Hollins' senior Carly Blumberg 6-0, 6-3. Caroline Byrd '08 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) and Julie Geyer '05 (Dallas, TX/ Highland Park) both took home third place. Byrd defeated Nicole Koiner (Mary Baldwin) 6-0, 6-0 and Geyer had a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over Stephanie King (RMWC).
The Vixens had a total of 20 wins in the tournament. Sweet Briar's next home duel tennis match is against the Wildcats of Randolph-Macon Woman's College during families' weekend Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m.
