The Sweet Briar College field hockey team shut out Randolph-Macon Woman's College 5-0 Saturday in the first game of the Virginia Women's College Field Hockey Tournament.
Sweet Briar led at the half 2-0. Junior Paula Kirkland (Glen Allen, VA/St. Gertrudes) popped in the Vixens' first goal of the season, and game winner, at 13:09 on a deflection from senior Ginger Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherines). Tripp added another goal on an assist from senior Susanna Knouse (Washington, DC/Fort Worth CDS) before the end of the half.
The Vixens continued to score in the second half with goals from Tripp, Knouse and two from junior Julie Drake (San Jose, CA/Willow Glen). Freshman Bethany Bressan (Charlottesville, VA/STAB) had two assists in the second half and Tripp added one. Sweet Briar's defense did not allow RMWC to cross the midline for the first 56 minutes of regulation.
Head coach Jennifer Crispen said, ""This was a good win over a cross-town rival and a solid start to our season. That all goals were assisted speaks to significant good movement on attack.""
The Vixens continue in the tournament Sunday against Mary Baldwin at 1 p.m.
