The Sweet Briar College soccer team shut out Averett University 4-0 Friday in the first game of the Bluefield Classic. Sweet Briar led at the half 1-0 on a goal by Allison Polson (Los Olivos, CA/Dunn) assisted from Kathryn Strong (Beverly Hills, MI/Groves).
The Vixens continued their scoring in the second half with goals in the 55th minute from Carlina Muglia (Amherst,VA/Amherst County), in the 79th minute by Chelsea Stamer (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee), and with an unassisted score in the game's 85th minute by Michelle Leslie (Senaca, SC/Senaca).
Strong, Kylie Izzi (Bainsbridge Island, WA/Bainsbridge), and Caitlin Ashley (St. Albans, WV/St. Albans) each had one assist as Sweet Briar's offense pounded Averett's goal with 25 shots. Abby Brown (Copper Canyon, TX/Marcus) had two saves for the shutout. Averett goalie Jeanie Byrd had 15 saves for the Cougars.
Head coach Paul Shaw said, ""This weekend is about bonding as a team on and off the field. We have goals to accomplish. We did okay today--we are content, not completely happy.""
The Vixens continue play in the tournament Saturday with a match against Bluefield College at 11 a.m.
