Sweet Briar College lacrosse coach Missy Ackerman and four of her players were honored by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with 2004 ODAC All-Conference post-season recognition.
Senior captain Anne Benham (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands) was named to the ODAC All-Conference first team. Benham, a midfielder, led the ODAC in ground balls (72) and was #6 in goals scored (35). Benham also ranked #19 nationally in ground balls. She was a recent recipient of Sweet Briar's Crysler Award, honoring the College's outstanding four-year athlete.
Three Norfolk Academy alumnae joined Benham, with senior co-captain Maria Kitchin (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) earning second team honors for her midfield play. Kitchin received Sweet Briar's Coaches Award this year, honoring a senior athlete. Sophomore Julie Sellers (Virginia Beach, VA/ Norfolk Academy) was named honorable mention. She was #10 in conference scoring with 23 goals. First year keeper Emily Fitzpatrick (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) also received honorable mention. Fitzpatrick was #4 in save percentage (.555) and #3 in saves per game (10.07).
Coach Missy Ackerman, in her second year at Sweet Briar, was co-coach of the year with Washington and Lee's Jan Hathorn. Ackerman, a 1987 graduate of SBC and lacrosse All-American, coached Sweet Briar to 7-7 overall; the award was her sixth career Coach of the Year honor.
