Freshman Shannon Smith scored for Lynchburg with :49 left in the third overtime to lift the Hornets past host Sweet Briar College 13-12 today in ODAC lacrosse. Smith and Rachel Bauer each scored three. The Vixens were paced by senior midfielder Anne Benham (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) with six and sophomore Julie Sellers (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) with three. Lynchburg led 8-6 at the half, and the lead see-sawed for the remainder of the game. A Sweet Briar shot at the buzzer in regulation was waved off, and the teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods before LC pulled it out in the third. Vixen keeper Emily Fitzpatrick '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) made twelve saves in goal, including three crucial blocks in the third OT.
Sweet Briar coach Missy Ackerman said, ""In a game like this you have to make the best of your opportunities, and for most of the game we did just that. In the end, it was a question of who was going to take the advantage first.""
Sweet Briar is 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC. They have a make up contest with Randolph-Macon in Ashland tomorrow at 4:30 pm.
