Vixen softball continues a season of ups and downs, fighting weather and opponents. In a tough double-header March 11 against the Squirrels of Mary Baldwin, SBC dropped the first game 3-14, hitting the ball well, but right at the opposition. Lindsey Nash '05 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County HS), Ania Stubelek '07 (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays HS), Megan Chenault '07 (Amherst, MA/Amherst County HS), Dana Ripperton '05 (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel HS) and Melanie Stine '07 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County HS) each had one hit. In the second game, Sweet Briar led for most of the contest, but ran out of pitching and made some untimely errors to give up four runs and the lead.
Against the Salem Spirits, Nash had a standout game, pitching well and going 3-4 at the plate. Chenault and Stine each banged out two, but SBC dropped the game 10-12. According to coach Tony Campbell, ""The team just needed better defense in the clutch."" Hurler Mandy Ponton '05 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County HS) had good stuff in the second game, and the Vixens had seven hits, but lost 5-14.
Against perennially tough Southern Virginia, the young Sweet Briar team put together some of its best ball to date, with Nash mopping up for Ponton on the mound, and keeping the Vixens close. Stubelek was 3-3, and Nash 2-2. Errors proved costly in the second game, but the team put in some good innings. Lynnsey Kraus '07 (Sugarland, TX/Clements HS) continued her strong play behind the plate.
Sweet Briar is 2-6.
