Health care exchange notice

Since passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, the delivery of health care services in America has been redefined by a steady flow of new benefits, requirements and regulatory guidelines.  Continued implementation of the ACA is scheduled for January 1, 2014, which will mark the introduction of an important new delivery system – Health Care Exchanges, also known as the Health Insurance Marketplace.

 The Individual Mandate:
Effective January 1, 2014, most U.S. citizens will be required to obtain health care coverage.  Those who are required – but fail to do so – will be charged a tax penalty.  For those without access to coverage (e.g., through an employer or on a parent’s health plan), health insurance will be available for purchase through an exchange.

This week, you received an email with high-level information about the Health Insurance Marketplace because exchanges across the country – including here in Virginia — will begin accepting enrollments on October 1 – for coverage that will be effective on Jan. 1, 2014.
