Poet and essayist Lia Purpura will read from her latest work at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 in the Wailes Lounge of the Florence Elston Inn & Conference Center at Sweet Briar College.
The reading is part of the “First Wednesdays” series sponsored by the College’s creative writing program. Admission is free.
Purpura, writer-in-residence at Loyola College in Baltimore and a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will read from her collection of essays, “On Looking.” The book was a finalist last year for a National Book Critics’ Circle Award and one of its essays, “On Form,” won a 2007 Pushcart Prize.
Purpura also is author of “Increase,” “Stone Sky Lifting,” “Poems of Grzegorz Musial: Berliner Tagebuch and Taste of Ash” and “The Brighter the Veil,” for which she was awarded the Towson University Prize in Literature in 1998.
