October at Sweet Briar. Time to come home. Or bring a little home to a student who could use the diversion at the semester’s midpoint.
Sweet Briar’s Homecoming/Families Weekend, held Oct. 19-21, brings the entire College community together. It’s an opportunity for students and parents to meet faculty, staff and alumnae and discover what the College is really about. And, of course, it’s a time for alumnae to reconnect with classmates in the place where they forged lifelong friendships.
It’s not too late to register for any of a full slate of activities. Events range from social — such as the don’t-miss community picnic near Guion Science Center at noon Saturday — to informational. The later category includes a talk on smart estate planning and President Parker’s State of the College address.
We’ve got the cultural calendar covered, too, with ongoing art and history exhibitions in the art galleries and museum, along with performances of the Sweet Briar Theatre’s fall musical, “The King and I.” The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic is directed by Professor Bill Kershner, who will be celebrating his “first 25 years” at the College at an open reception following Saturday night’s performance.
For those following the progress on the library renovation and expansion, there will be an architect presentation at 3:45 p.m. Friday in Powell Reading Room. Much work also has been done recently to improve classrooms, and guests can take their pick of tours or open houses on Saturday: Biology and engineering are hosting an open house at 1:30 p.m. in Guion, including tours of renovated classrooms and labs; the “Classroom Crawl” begins at 3 p.m., offering a guided tour of newly renovated high-tech classrooms in Fletcher, Benedict and Pannell; and the new-look Babcock 127 will be dedicated in honor of Professor Rebecca McCord at 4:30 p.m.
These are just a few of the events on a schedule that also includes hiking and canoeing, athletic contests and hunter trials, parent and alumnae volunteer training, and faculty lectures. Click here for a complete listing of events and fees. Visit sbc.edu/alumdev/homecoming to register.
