Ensembles

Chamber Choir – Chamber choir is an ensemble of 16-20 members.  Singers are expected to have a medium to advanced ability to read music and should be comfortable carrying a part alone.  We will explore a wide range of vocal music.  Audition required.

Chamber Orchestra - Chamber Orchestra is the principal instrumental music ensemble at Sweet Briar. We perform works from throughout the western art music tradition, but are committed to performing new music (especially by student composers) and participating in collaborative projects with other performing arts groups on campus. Previous experience with instrumental music is helpful, but not required.

Concert Choir – Concert Choir is open to any and all levels of singers. Students with no previous choral experience, let alone singing experience, are welcome and are encouraged to dive into the deep end

Drumming Ensemble - Many culture groups have communities that come together to drum because it is a way to embody and celebrate group values, affirm bonds of community, and have fun. Our ensemble shares in this broadly human heritage by exploring cultural contexts, rhythms, and styles of drumming from around the world. No previous experience is necessary, but an audition is required.

Octavo – Octavo is an eight-member ensemble comprised of very advanced choral students.  Octavo primarily sings a cappella and enjoys repertoire that spans from early music to modern.  We also make music of our own with the hope of creating a sound that is unique and empowering.  Audition required.

Recorder Ensemble - Our recorder ensemble specializes in historically informed performance of recorder music from medieval times through the baroque era. However, we also delight in performing contemporary, popular music that has been reimagined through the compositional processes and musical styles of our art form. No previous experience is necessary, but an audition is required.

Skiffle (USA) - Skiffle Steel Orchestra from San Fernando, Trinidad, is a perennial finalist in Panorama and has won the World Steel Band Music Festival more times than anyone else. Sweet Briar College is the home of the only foreign branch of this venerable institution. No previous experience is necessary, but an audition is required.
