Sweet Briar College welcomes international women who are seeking a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and wish to do so at one of the top-ranked colleges for women in the United States.

Women’s Leadership Program for Chinese Students

In Spring 2016, Sweet Briar launched a program for exceptional Chinese students. In partnership with the Washington, D.C.-based National Center for Sustainable Development (NCSD), the Women’s Leadership Program brings highly qualified Chinese women to campus to study liberal arts as well as STEM. The program is in part driven by the Chinese government’s goal of preparing Chinese women for leadership roles in government, business, industry and education.

The Women’s Leadership Program will feature two summer sessions at a Washington, D.C. partner university. During the sessions, Chinese students will explore U.S. government institutions, governmental history and political decision-making processes — leadership elements that are crucial to the success of a bilateral relationship. Those summer sessions in Washington, combined with a summer internship, will result in the awarding of a Sweet Briar certificate along with the Sweet Briar diploma.

President Stone talked to students at Beijing Xicheng Foreign Languages School about the value of a liberal arts education.

President Stone traveled to Beijing in February 2016 to see how Sweet Briar and NCSD can collaborate with government and education officials to promote the Women’s Leadership Program. Meetings at the Chinese Ministry of Education’s Donfang International Center for Education Exchange led to preparation for a Memorandum of Understanding.

President Stone also met with students and school leaders at the Beijing Royal School and other excellent high schools in the capital. He learned firsthand of the deep interest among students and school administrators in the value of women’s education. Higher education dedicated solely to women is rare in China, but President Stone heard that young women understand how it can foster careers and lives of meaning.

SBC learned that in addition to the available programs of study at SBC, including the College’s ABET-accredited engineering program, Chinese students and officials are excited about the safe, secure campus and the famed Sweet Briar riding program.
