INTD 119

In the Company of Animals

Prerequisite: Open only to first-year students in the y:1 program. The course is an historical and contemporary examination of human interactions with wild and domestic animals. We start with a review of basic ecological principles through which we examine our relationships to other species during our early evolution. Then we explore changing human-animal relationships arising from domestication and the rise of livestock and companion animals in our early societies and cultures. Finally, we examine our modern relationship with animals considering both practical and philosophical questions of animal welfare in the framework of the relatively new academic field variously known as Human-Animal Studies or Anthrozoology.
