Why study religion?

Since the beginning of human history, religious beliefs and practices have built and challenged societies. The study of religion introduces students to the major religious traditions of the world and their impact on human culture. Courses focus on both the methodologies of religious studies and the literature and practices of diverse religious communities. In addition to their specific content, these courses develop an appreciation for the religious point of view and prepare one to live in a religiously pluralistic society. Most courses take an historical approach to the human religious experience.

Why religion at Sweet Briar?

Professor Pollick with StudentsSmall classes allow close interaction with faculty and other classmates, so students more fully engage in the learning process. And with special-topics courses available, religion students have a voice in what is covered in the classroom. Students master the critical methods used in contemporary scholarship in the humanities and social sciences.
