John Ashbrook has taught at Sweet Briar since 2005. His research interests involve war, politicization of identities, regionalism and nationalism, small government and conservatism, and most recently the expansion of the European Union into Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Prof. Ashbrook published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals, including East European Politics and Societies, the Journal of the American Association for History and Computing, The Carl Beck Papers, Nationalities Papers, Small Wars and Insurgencies, and Problems in Post-communism. His first book, “Buying and Selling the Istrian Goat: Istrian Regionalism, Croatian Nationalism, and EU Enlargement,” was published in 2008.

His interests include international travel, role-playing games, shooting, motorcycling, heavy metal music, and hiking in Colorado and his native Appalachia.
