Beginning with the 2017-18 academic year, Sweet Briar College has an agreement with Centra Health, a nonprofit regional healthcare system, for medical care. This relationship allows Sweet Briar students to have access to more medical services, more hours of service and more medically trained professionals at a brand-new facility nearby.
Centra Health is the largest health care facility in the region and has recently opened a new, 17,500-square-foot ambulatory care center (CMG-Amherst) less than a mile from campus, located in the Ambriar Plaza. The state-of-the-art facility provides services that include, but are not limited to: primary care, x-ray and laboratory services and physical therapy. The Amherst medical team includes three physicians and three nurse practitioners with a vast network of specialists for referral.
Appointments are required for routine medical care such as physicals and wellness visits. Same-day appointments are available for those who are sick. If you choose to use CMG-Amherst, Centra gives Sweet Briar students priority. CMG-Amherst is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
For more information, visit the CMG-Amherst website or call 434-946-9565.
For athletes, a Centra medical doctor will be on site to address sports-related injuries and concerns.
Sweet Briar will provide free transportation to CMG-Amherst. Students can contact Deborah Mays at 434-381-6140. In case of an emergency, please contact campus safety at 434-381-6111.
Centra accepts many forms of medical insurance, including nearly all major insurance providers. If you do not have health insurance, information about options through the Affordable Care Act are available at healthcare.gov, a federally run health care exchange.
