Swords and Shieldmaidens: Gender Politics in Medieval Heroic Epic
CR:
3.0

Prerequisite: Sophomores with permission. Though medieval heroic epics focus on (and are often named for) their male heroes, they also include female characters of subtle but essential significance. This course will examine representations of gender and gender roles in medieval heroic literature and how those representations change over time and across cultures, assessing the extent to which the heroes of this genre owe their fame and fates to the unacknowledged heroines with whom they interact.
