B.S., Chemistry | Illinois State University
Ph.D., Analytical/Inorganic Chemistry | Purdue University

Professor Granger teaches instrumental analysis, analytical chemistry, advanced inorganic and general chemistry courses. He is also the lead author of the bestselling textbook “Instrumental Analysis,” published through Oxford University Press. While at Purdue, Granger conducted research on materials used for the direct LASER writing of circuitry. After graduate school, he took a position at Virginia Military Institute (VMI), where he taught advanced inorganic chemistry and general chemistry. While at VMI, he was awarded the Hinman Research Award for excellence in stimulating, encouraging and conducting research. Upon his arrival at Sweet Briar College in 1999, Granger founded the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference of Undergraduate Research (MARCUS), which continues to host undergraduate scholars from the entire mid-Atlantic region. Granger’s current research interests involve developing cis-platin analogs (a class of anti-cancer drugs) and developing electro-catalysts that mimic the chemical processes of photosynthesis.

Professor Yousef worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, before joining the faculty at Sweet Briar in 2007. Yousef is an organic chemist with an interest in the synthesis and photochemistry of 3(2H)-furanones, a class of compounds found in a wide variety of natural products with known medicinal properties. He is also interested in chemical education research and the implementation of novel experiments for the sophomore-level organic chemistry laboratory.
