Why study chemistry?
Chemistry is known as the “central science” because it connects the physical sciences with the life and applied sciences. All investigation of matter at the molecular level depends on theories of chemistry.
Why study chemistry at Sweet Briar?
Sweet Briar offers a supportive and rigorous curriculum to women with diverse experience. We offer both a B.A. and a B.S. degree in chemistry. Students can also earn a B.S. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology (B&MB) — a joint major program of the chemistry and biology departments.
Our small class size ensures that faculty are more than teachers; they are mentors who are committed to your success at Sweet Briar and beyond. In any intro lab section, you will never be in a class with more than 16 students. Class size for intermediate and advances courses is five to six students.
What can you do with a chemistry major?
Sweet Briar chemistry alumnae attend the top graduate programs in the country, including: CalTech, Princeton, Harvard, Purdue, Penn State, Ohio State, Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt, University of California Riverside, Florida State and the University of Virginia. Many majors have earned advanced degrees in medical, dental, pharmacy and allied health.
