Networking: How You Can Help Students and Fellow AlumnaeYou know people and organizations in your community to whom you could refer students and alumnae for information and assistance. You know of, or can find out about, places for the student or an alumna to live while she is in your area. You can critique and refine a student's or alumna's resume and interviewing skills, especially if you specialize in a particular career or field of study. You can be the catalyst for a student or alumna who is networking in your community, whether you have or have not been employed outside the home. You can be the all-important mentor and friend who opens the door of unlimited possibilty; a student or alumna could succeed and carry on in the College's tradition of excellence with new employment and internship experience all because of your shared connection with Sweet Briar. INTERNSHIPS Do you know of an internship that would be perfect for a current Sweet Briar student? LET CAREER SERVICES KNOW! Please contact Kristin Dane Ewing with any information about internship opportunities. Sweet Briar students typically do internships over the summer (when they are not in class) but they are not limited to this time frame and may also do internships during the fall and spring semesters. Internships may or may not earn academic credit – depending on experience. Internships may or may not be paid. Internship opportunities that you provide Career Services will be entered into a database (MonsterTRAK) for all Sweet Briar students to view. This information will also be available in the Career Services Center and students will be encouraged to pursue any applicable options. CAREERS Do you know of a job opportunity for a recent graduate?! LET CAREER SERVICES KNOW! If your place of employment is hiring contact Wayne Stark, Director of Career Services at wstark@sbc.edu or 434-381-6463. BEING CONTACTED BY A STUDENT? Have you heard from a Sweet Briar student recently? As students pursue internships and plans for after graduation, we often encourage them to contact alumnae. There certainly is no expectation that you will place them in an internship or a job, we simply feel that talking with current students about your experience after graduation is extremely beneficial to current students. Please feel free to provide them any insight about your career path, the ups and downs you faced along the way and any advice or networking opportunities you might have available. Start the networking process by contacting Sweet Briar's Career Services Center --- the staff there will put you in touch with students who need your help, or with opportunities to network with fellow alumnae. |
