Sweet Briar Now and Forever: YOU Make the Difference

Our Path to SustainabilityIn her commencement speech, board member and Task Rabbit founder Leah Busque ’01 told the Class of 2016 to have “big hairy audacious goals . . . goals so outrageous, so ambitious, that it is almost crazy to consider them,” invoking the fundraising heroics of Saving Sweet Briar Inc., which made the rescue of the College possible.

Throughout the past year, alumnae have asked, “What is next for the College?” Aumnae and friends of the College are steadfast in their belief in the relevance of a women’s liberal arts education in general, and specifically in the value of a Sweet Briar education based on the strength of our faculty. That belief, and the alumnae’s own Sweet Briar educational experience, empowered them to save the College. What’s next for the College is as audacious as that amazing effort. Building from our values and strength, our audacious goal is not only to return Sweet Briar to its preeminence as a top women’s liberal arts college, but to make it the leading women’s liberal arts college in America, and a global forum for women’s learning and leadership.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Sweet Briar Fund?

The Sweet Briar Fund is the rebranded annual giving program. We invite all alumnae to significantly support Sweet Briar every year — not just those alumnae celebrating a Reunion year. Gifts to the Sweet Briar Fund are unrestricted and support the operating budget of the College.

Why does the bar graph show that the contribution from the Sweet Briar Fund decreases over the next five years?

The bar graph demonstrates how we will diversify our funding sources. As alternative revenue streams grow, there will be decreased dependence on the Sweet Briar Fund. It does not indicate that we need fewer resources to fund the College. Instead, it illustrates how the money we raise will be a smaller portion of total income, as tuition and other revenues grow.

What are "Auxiliaries" on the graph?

The auxiliary revenue for the College is derived from activities such as Book Shop sales, The Elston Inn & The Conference Center revenue, and fees from the riding center.

If I make a gift to the Sweet Briar Fund, will it count for my class Reunion total?

Yes, your gift will count toward the total class gift that fiscal year and the lifetime class giving.

For non-Reunion classes, gifts will count toward the Centennial Award at your next Reunion and the lifetime class giving.

If I accelerate my Saving Sweet Briar pledge for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, will it count towards the Sweet Briar Fund?

Yes. Please make all checks payable to Sweet Briar College. All gifts will count toward the total class gifts and Lifetime Class Giving.
