Alumnae Association

Awards

Award nominations are reviewed and recipients are selected by the Association's Alumnae Awards Committee, which consists of the president of the Alumnae Association, who serves as chair, the president of the College, the dean of the College, the dean of co-curricular life, the director of the Alumnae Association, the vice president for development and college relations, a faculty member appointed by the president of the College, the first vice president and chair of clubs, the senior association board member on the College board of directors, the editor of the alumnae magazine, the nominating chair, and any others asked to serve by the president of the Alumnae Association.

Distinguished Alumna Award

In 1987, the board of the Alumnae Association established the Distinguished Alumna Award to honor alumnae (preferably graduates) who have brought distinction to themselves and to Sweet Briar College through outstanding accomplishment in a volunteer or professional capacity.

The award is presented by the president of the Alumnae Association, preferably — though not necessarily, at Founders’ Day. (The first awards were presented at Opening Convocation in 1988.)

Nominations are invited from any member of the Sweet Briar family: alumnae, faculty, administration, staff, members of the Alumnae Board and the College Board of Directors, and students.

Nominate online or by mail to: Alumnae Awards Committee, c/o the Alumnae Association, Sweet Briar College. Nominations remain active for 4 years — after that time, they will be considered by the Awards Committee to either be reproposed or withdrawn from consideration.

See list of recipients.

Outstanding Alumna Award

In 1968, on recommendation of the Board of the Alumnae Association, President Anne Gary Pannell established “The Sweet Briar College Alumna Award in Honor of the Class of 1910.”

The award may be given to graduate alumnae who have been out of College for at least 15 years in recognition of outstanding service to Sweet Briar College in a volunteer capacity. Not more than three awards may be made in any year. The award is presented by the president of the Alumnae Association, preferably — though not necessarily — at Reunion. (The first award was made to the entire Class of 1910 and was presented at Founders’ Day in June 1968.)

Alumna Daughter Scholar Award

The Alumna Daughter Scholar award was established in 1974 by the board of the Alumnae Association to honor an alumna daughter or granddaughter in either the junior or senior class who has demonstrated, while at Sweet Briar, the traditions of sound learning and social responsibility which have characterized the alumnae of the College since its founding. The student chosen will be named the Alumna Daughter Scholar.

If the student named Alumna Daughter Scholar is in need of financial aid, she will receive aid from the proceeds of the endowed fund. If she does not need aid, the proceeds will be awarded to another alumna daughter or daughters of any class and the Scholar shall receive a $250 credit at the Book Shop.

In recent years, eligibility for the Alumna Daughter Scholar award has expanded to include not just daughters and granddaughters of Sweet Briar alumnae, but also nieces, sisters, cousins, etc.

The Alumnae Association Awards Committee reviews the academic records of students eligible for the award, as well their participation and roles in the life of the Sweet Briar community. A selection is made in the spring of each year, and the award is given to the recipient at Opening Convocation.
